Being Human – An Affront to Vampires

Being Human (UK) airing on BBC3
L-R: George, Mitchell, Annie

Hello my friends, for those of you who are fans of the TV show Being Human, read no further, because I am going to bag the shit out of it. And just to be clear, I’m referring to the original UK version.

And yes there will be spoilers.

For those of you who know nothing about the show, according to BBC3 (the show producers):

Being Human

Comedy-drama series about three twenty-something housemates trying to live normal lives, despite struggling with unusual afflictions – one is a werewolf, one is a vampire and the other is a ghost.

This show was brought to my attention by my lovely assistant Rachel. Nicole and I thought it might be good for a giggle watching a werewolf, vampire and ghost try to live together. So let’s meet the three main characters:

Annie – The Ghost
Being Human (UK)

Annie – The Ghost

Annie was murdered by her fiance and is doomed to haunt the house they bought together. She is vapid, pointless and simply plain annoying.

A ghost could cause all kinds of mischief and mayhem, but not this girl. She seems to be a strange combination of Casper and Miss Daisy.

This ghost spends her day making cups of tea, littering the house from one end to the other with teacups.

It wasn’t until the final episode of Season 2 that she actually did something useful. If she wasn’t already dead I’d love to kill her.

Mitchell – The Vampire
Being Human (UK)

Mitchell – The Vampire

Supposedly suave and supremely attractive. Why cast a guy who looks like he spent six months playing Robinson Crusoe. He desperately needs a haircut, a shave and overall improvement in the personal grooming department.

Mitchell’s attempt at “Being Human” involves getting on the “wagon”. For those unfamiliar with the term, he is a vampire who chooses not to drink blood! I will rant more about this later.

Personally I think he must have a personalty disorder. There is no stability in his character’s behaviour at all. If you are a selfish bastard, then be a selfish bastard. If you a are a loyal friend, be a loyal friend. Get rid of the vampiric chameleon and he might be barely tolerable.

George – The Werewolf
Being Human (UK)

George – The Werewolf

Last but not least we come to George. Who, incidentally, was one of the few actors not to be recast after the pilot.

Despite being a werewolf, which I am going to overlook for the moment, George is the one redeeming feature of this otherwise travesty of a show.

George is a little strange, weird, romantic, excitable and even a bit womanish at times, but; he has a heart of gold. If you only had one friend in the world and it was George, you would be a very lucky person.

The character of George is the glue which holds this ramshackle trainwreck together. It is sad to see such a great character wallowing in the misery of crappy company.

Vampires Drink Blood

I have so many complaints about the portrayal of vampires in this show I barely know where to start. Okay, first up, vampires parade around during the day and sleep at night. WTF?! Vampires are creatures of the night and always have been. It’s not impossible for us to move around during the day, but certainly not to the extent this show would have you believe.

Vampires eating and drinking human food: You can’t be serious. How many sets of organs do you think can fit in a body? One set to handle the digestion of human food and another separate set for blood?  Vampires drink blood! They don’t sit down for a roast meal and then sip a glass of extra thick red later. They drink blood, nothing else.

Vampires on the wagon: No vampire would ever choose to stop drinking blood. It is the equivalent of a human being deciding to stop breathing. But according to the makers of Being Human it is perfectly reasonable for a vampire to quit drinking blood and settle for plain ordinary human food. Nonsense, utterly ridiculous. Maybe I missed the memo announcing that drinking blood was optional for vampires.

Vampire resurrection: There’s a rather smarmy vampire leader called Herrick, who I was ever so grateful to see killed. Oh but wait, he’s not really dead because with enough vampire blood he can be resurrected. Firstly I’d like to point out the lack of continuity in logic.

In Season One you witness a vampire being staked and she turns to dust. Meanwhile at the end of Season Two, Herrick can be resurrected by pouring vampire blood on his bones. So what happens when a vampire dies? Do they turn to dust or not? Make up your mind.

Anyway, I’m not saying vampire blood isn’t powerful, I’ve seen it work miracles – on living tissue. There is no amount of vampire blood that can reanimate dead tissue. And even if it could, wouldn’t that make a zombie?

Isis only knows what makes this show popular. I’ve endured two seasons and I will endure no more. Hopefully the folks in Canada can pump out enough episodes of Lost Girl to keep me happy.

Where Do I Start?

Got a few things to get through today, but I’ll start with the most important. (Important to me anyway)

Desires Revealed Update

After several weeks of nail-biting anxiety, my editor has returned my manuscript for Desires Revealed. There is much work to be done before it will be ready for publication, but not as much as I had anticipated.

I’ve already started on the necessary changes and additions. So now it is only a matter of time before I will be able to announce its release. As always I will keep you informed of the current status.

Wannabe Vampires

This past week I received an email asking me (once again) about being turned into a vampire, but this time the wannabe vampire wanted to know more about what abilities they would have once changed.

I truly understand the human fascination with vampires, because I am just as fascinate by humans, but … There is much more to being a vampire other than the fact we are stronger and faster than humans. When I receive emails such as I did this week, I can’t help but wonder if I completely wasted my time writing Vampires Revealed. Why did I go to such lengths to explain vampires to you if the majority of humans are going to totally disregard the information within.

Anyway, to anyone considering they may want to be a vampire I say this… give serious and lengthy thought to what it is you are giving up: being human. You may have a limited life span but it can be one heck of ride if you give it half a chance.

When Humans Don’t Know How To Be Human

Regular readers will be familiar with my assistant Rachel. Recently she met a man and so far so good. They have a lot in common but enough differences to keep things interesting.

Rachel spends far too much time alone, and I was very pleased when she told me she was seeing someone. For awhile I thought I could sense some ambivalence in her emotions; but you know, we vampires aren’t so great at interpreting human feelings. I didn’t want to question Rachel in case I was making trouble where there was none.

Over the past week (it has been non-stop action at Bektamun Central) this sense of ambivalence has been increasing. Finally I could no longer put off sitting Rachel down and having a good talk. I was right, there was something bothering her.

Emotions - humans are full of them. It's a wonder they can function half the time.

The problem it seems is that Mr X is completely incapable of displaying, sharing or even acknowledging emotion. At first I thought she must have unwittingly begun dating a vampire.

As best I could I tried to help Rachel. She is quite the romantic and can easily fall in love. Sometime too easily and I don’t want to see her get hurt by Mr Freeze.

It was clear that Rachel really likes this guy, but she was having serious doubts. She didn’t know if she should let him know how much she cared, when he showed so little indication of wanting to hear it.

His scent was all over, so it wasn’t hard for me to track him down. When I found him I entered his mind and was overwhelmed with surprise with his thoughts. His mind was literally flooded with thoughts or Rachel. He was remembering again and again the time they spent together, how much he liked her smile, the way her hair moved when she laughed. I was taken aback. Before finding him I had been ready to scare the fear of God into him, but now I didn’t know what to do.

The solution to Rachel’s problem is a story for another day. But this got me to thinking; why do so many humans struggle with being human?

Emotions are a perfectly natural thing. Sometimes you’re happy, sometimes you’re sad, angry, frustrated etc. But if you are happy and it is someone that makes you happy, why can’t you tell them?

Okay so you are insecure and worried they don’t feel the same way. Have you ever stopped to think that may be exactly what they are thinking.

Now listen up humans, because what I’m about to tell you is critical. Emotions are raw, naked honesty. Emotions cannot lie. Sharing your emotions is the most important method you have available to connect with other humans. Regardless of whether the emotion is good, bad or otherwise, you must share. And you, on the receiving end; you listen up too! When someone opens themselves up, bares their soul to you allowing you a glimpse of that raw emotion; there is nothing in the world more important than giving them your full attention.

What you need to remember my dear human friends, is that everyone around is just as scared and insecure as you are. And like you, they want to love and be loved.

Try being honest with yourself and those around you. It will do you a world of good. And if it doesn’t and you want to end it all, I could always use more snacks.

Editing, Research & All The Really Fun Stuff

Hello dear friends! As you may know, Desires Revealed is currently with my editor. I am expecting to receive it back plastered with notes on changes which need to be made. Then the really hard work starts; making it pristine and perfect for you to enjoy.

But I’m not letting any grass grow under my feet while I wait impatiently for its return. While I’m waiting I have turned my attention to preparing for our next vampiric jourmey together.

If you have read Vampires Revealed, you should recall I mentioned my brother Reseph. For many years he hid behind the disguise of a highwayman in Europe. This will be the next tale I bring to you.

The time period I will focus on is the latter part of the 18th century, around the time of the French Revolution. Obviously this is not my story, so I am spending many hours in communication with Reseph so I can bring you the most accurate iteration within my power.

Also the weather is beginning to turn cooler in my part of the world. This makes and hunting and feeding discreetly a bit more difficult. Most people tend towards staying inside, it is harder to locate easy prey. So I am considering a sojourn in France. Ah it would be lovely in Paris.

I’m sorry there is so little news, maybe I’m becoming boring in my old age.

Sink Your Teeth Into a Succubus

Sink Your Teeth Into a Succubus

Recently I discovered the most excellent television viewing, a show called Lost Girl.

Lost Girl focuses on the gorgeous and charismatic Bo, a supernatural being called a succubus who feeds on the energy of humans, sometimes with fatal results. Refusing to embrace her supernatural clan system and its rigid hierarchy, Bo is a renegade who takes up the fight for the underdog while searching for the truth about her own mysterious origins. Courtesy of IMDB

What I like about this show, apart from the sizzling sexy women, is that it stretches the boundaries between reality and fantasy. Have you never stopped to ask yourself the question, “If vampires are real, what else is out there?”

The other thing I love about this show is the way in which it deals with sexuality. As a succubus Bo is basically bisexual, feeding off sexual ‘chi’. There is bisexuality, homosexuality, lesbianism, even a couple of threesomes. Far from being soft porn, sexuality is portrayed without childish sniggering or narrow-minded prejudice.

The concept of good versus evil is explored with the Fae being divided between ‘Light” and ‘Dark’.

Overall a quality show and well worth a look.

Almost every episode introduces you to a new mythical being. According to creator M.A. Lovretta, all supernatural creatures belong to a race known as the Fae (or Fairy). And we’re not talking soft and cuddly like a fairy Godmother.

Creatures from Lost Girl

Succubus

Blood sage – can change reality by writing in book using their blood as ink

Banshee

Siren

Brownie

Furies

Will O’ the Wisp

Hsien – can inhabit any dead body simlpy by touching it

Aswang

Norn

And that’s just from Season One.

A Desirable Draft

Hello my dear readers, finally, after months of hard work and collaboration, I can announce the completion of the first draft of Desires Revealed.

I must confess this project proved to be far more difficult than I had originally anticipated. Without Nicole’s help it would perhaps have taken me much longer.

With the first draft finished, now comes the truly hard part. Editing, polishing, rewriting as necessary to make it ready for publication. It is my dearest hope to have this work released within the next two months. However, as the saying goes “the best laid plans of mice and men”, my goal may not be reached.

For now I am simply satisfied to have the base for bringing you what is truly an amazing tale. As I work through the editing process I may even share a sneak peek or two with you.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula

Bram Stoker's Dracula - first released 1897

What can you say about this book which hasn’t been said already? Well at least I can speak about this as a vampire.

I don’t often read vampire based fiction, however it seemed appropriate since I am now a vampire author to familiarise myself with the work of others.

The character of ‘Count Dracula’ is generally considered the benchmark by which vampire fiction is measured. It is also a prime source for today’s vampire mythology.

Written in a time when human society dearly clung to Christian ideals, it comes as no suprise that Dracula was portrayed as an Undead monster. His kiss may not only cause death, but forever put your immortal soul in peril.

Dracula could walk around during daylight hours, however, much weakened and without being able to use his Devilish talents. At night he could take the form of a bat, wolf or even mist. He could command the elements to hasten or hinder a ship’s voyage. He slept in a tomb and when away from home sought refuge in the soil of his homeland. His sanctuaries could be rendered useless to him with the use of communinion wafer or The Host. And of course garlic was abhorrent to Count Dracula.

This ‘original’ vampire has been the basis for several movie adaptations. And like most things Hollywood gets its hands on, ruined what was a great story. (Notwithstanding the falsehoods told about vampires)

Bela Lugosi - the original "Count Dracula"

Almost ten years after Nosferatu scared movie-goers witless along came Bela Lugosi as the infamous Count Dracula.

Many still argue that Bela Lugosi is ‘THE’ Count Dracula. However, Hollywood always ready to recycle and claim improvement has seen a couple more renditions of this chilling tale.

Again in 1958 starring Christopher Lee and once more in 1992 with Gary Oldman in the lead. I have not seen all of these movies, so forgive me if I forgo the opportunity to critique them.

Reading Dracula in the 21st century it can be hard to understand why this was considered such a horror story. We must remember the time it was written. Christian morals and religious ideals were more or less a ‘must have’ in human society. It was unthinkable in that day and age for anyone to admit they weren’t Christian.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

And so, full of religious whim and notions, along came Count Dracula; ready not only to take your life but damn your immortal soul to Hell. Creating an Undead army to unleash upon an unsuspecting humanity. Unfortunately the idea of vampires being the hero was beyond any writer’s wildest imagination,  our poor Count found himself defeated.

Fans of vampire fiction, certainly any writer who uses vampire characters, owe a debt of gratitude to Mr Stoker. Without him and his ground-breaking work vampire fiction would likely not exist today.

Bloody Valentines Day

Image of Valentine's Day the media sells

February 14th is just around the corner. Florists, chocolatiers and greeting card companies are rubbing their hands with glee, as a flood of money comes their way. I doubt it will suprise you to learn that I think Valentine’s Day is a load of bollocks.

Do you have any idea where Valentine’s Day comes from? Or are you too enthralled with what to buy or wondering if you will receive a Valentine to care? Well let me give you a brief lesson in history.

Saint Valentine’s Day was established in 496AD by Pope Gelassius I to honor a pair

What Valentine's Day really means

of  Christian (Catholic) martyrs. Specifically Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni. So basically it all came about because the Roman Catholic Church wanted to celebrate the lives (and deaths) of a couple religious zealots. (Yep here I go again bashing religion)

It wasn’t until the medieval period around the 14th century that romance was linked to Valentine’s Day. It’s believed it was Chaucer’s love birds (Parlement of Foules 1382) which first provided this romantic link.

Now here we are in the 21st century and Valentine’s Day is yet another day which has been commercialised beyond recognition, far from its historical roots.

If you truly love someone you should not need a specific day to celebrate. Every day you share with a loved one is cause to celebrate. Simply to share your life with them is a priceless gift which should never be taken for granted.

Additions To My Hit List

Two young men should enjoy their last few hours living and breathing.

Man, 80, bashed by ‘cowardly, gutless’ home intruders

Bashing Victim

UPDATE 6pm: POLICE have labelled two thugs who attacked an 80-year-old stroke survivor in his home as cowardly and gutless.

The elderly Noble Park man, whom police named only as “Michael”, was bashed when the intruders forced their way into his Doonbrae Ave home about 11.30pm on Sunday, demanding money.

Some time ago I wrote asserting some people deserve to die. Spineless sadism such as this fires my natural rage. Inspires my cruelty, evokes my brutality.

Tonight I will pay a visit upon these pathetic, vile and vicious reprobates. It may not be justice, but at least these loathsome creatures will not live to ever hurt anyone again.

It’s All About You

Recently I received the following email from Amy:

I find this site very interesting. I would love to learn more about Vampires. I would also like to actually believe and know they exist. I’m sure you get hundreds of these type of questions but I can’t get Vampires out of my mind. I need to know more. I’m usually a person of science and lately I’ve been thinking maybe I’m wrong? Please help!

This blog is as much about you (the reader) as it is me or vampires. By now you should realise I’m very open about sharing information, so all you need do is ask.

Now before you begin bombarding me with an avalanche of questions…. Have you read Vampires Revealed? It is a virtual treasure trove of vampire information. Have you fully explored the archived articles? These should be your first steps.

Alright, so you’ve read Vampires Revealed and scoured this site, and there are some things you still don’t quite understand and have questions about. This was inevitable. It doesn’t matter how much work I put into it, I am always going to gloss over or forget things entirely.

You see, I am a vampire. So there are many things about being a vampire that I simply don’t notice or take for granted because its just the way it is. Much like if you were trying to explain being human or what life is like in your country. Many things seem passe and we become quite nonchalant when describing them.

So my dear readers, what do you want to know? And remember, there is no such thing as stupid question, only stupid assumptions. You can sumbit your questions here: Contact Bektamun

Before I go I would like to give you a quick update on the progress of Desires Revealed. Nicole has finally decided to be co-operative and is assisting me to narrate the tale. With her help I anticipate it won’t be too long before I can announce a first draft is completed. Stay tuned for details coming soon….
